Artist Statement
Late evening light and dynamic color influence me to transform the
traditional landscape and create a sense of place. Instead of starting a painting with drawings or on location, I begin in the studio with an
abstract format. I then explore the ideas of space and fluid movement while mining the richness of memory and its association with form and color. A richly nuanced palette evokes the emotion of place and time and is really the foundation for the work.
Color is the catalyst to create form and movement. The romantic elements that establish details of form and light are not important; it's the movement of space that defines a framework for the paintings. Pushing the painting to its finished stage is a process of striking a rich balance between space, form, light, and color.
